$230,000 in donations announced at Backwater 'pool party'

Thanksgiving weekend was a busy one in Guttenberg, with families gathering to celebrate the holiday, shoppers visiting local merchants, and a large event on Saturday evening at Lakeside Ballroom. Lakeside owners donated the hall for a ‘pool party,’ hosted by the band Backwater and their wives, to benefit the Wave of the Future campaign for a new swimming pool in Guttenberg. The event raised nearly $30,000.

Holiday train to stop in Marquette

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will have one stop in Clayton County this year.  On Thursday, Dec. 7, the train will stop in Marquette at 4 p.m. on the river side of the railroad tracks.  

The Holiday Train is beautifully decorated with over 80,000 lights and also features great entertainment. Admission is a non-perishable food item or monetary donation for the Clayton County Food Shelf.

Norbert Borcherding

Norbert "Norb" Borcherding, 70, died peacefully at home after a two-year battle with cancer.

Visitation was Friday, Nov. 24, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, Dubuque.

Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 25, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Garnavillo.

Leola "Lee" M. Brady, 87, of 3390 Lake Ridge Drive, Dubuque, formerly of Garnavillo, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017, at Manor Care Health Services, Dubuque.

Private immediate family services will be held at a later date per her request.

New mayor for North Buena Vista

Following the official canvass of votes on Nov. 13 for municipal elections held Nov. 7, a write-in candidate has been elected mayor of North Buena Vista.

Lacey Ludovissy garnered 15 write-in votes which tied the vote total for incumbent mayor Robert Ludovissy, who was the only declared candidate on the ballot.

Solar energy is hot topic at free educational lunch

About a dozen people gathered for a free luncheon on solar energy from Kent Kraus and Mike Brummer of Dubuque’s Eagle Point Solar on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at The Stadium in Guttenberg. Kraus and Brummer provided information on the parts of solar array systems, the process of installing solar arrays in homes, businesses and nonprofits, and the tax credits that are available for doing so.

Backwater to play for Nov. 25 pool party at Lakeside

Local favorite band and Midwestern All Music Association 2018 inductee Backwater is hosting a pool party for the Wave of the Future on Saturday, Nov. 25, at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg. Doors will open at 4 p.m. for food, games and a raffle, and Backwater will perform from 6-9 p.m.

David L. Troester, 70, of Vinton passed away on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, at Manor Care in Cedar Rapids.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 22, from 4-6 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 24, at Oakland Church of the Nazarene, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Pastor Dave King.

Funeral service were Tuesday, Nov. 21, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, conducted by Rev. Dennis Quint.
