Darlene Koster

 

Darlene Sue Koster, 82, Elkader, Iowa, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2014, with her family by her side. Darlene was born on November 28, 1931, in Breda, Iowa, the daughter of A.J. and Elizabeth (Schulte) Wolterman. She spent her younger years in the Breda area and graduated from St. Bernard’s School in 1949. Darlene was a nurse’s aide in surgery at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, until she married the love of her life, Roger Koster, on June 15, 1955, at St. Bernard’s Church in Breda.

Leon Glen Schweitzer

 

Leon Glen Schweitzer was born August 21, 1914, on the family farm northeast of Winthrop, IA, the son of William Frederick and Lucinda Elizabeth Sickles Schweitzer. He attended the local country schools. 

Glen was united in marriage to Marian Esther Meffert on March 11, 1934, at the Congregational Parsonage in Winthrop. To this union were born three children: Kathleen, Carol, and Leon Jr. Glen was a lifetime farmer who loved his family and his farm. He was especially happy whenever the little children were around. He also loved to travel with his wife, Marian.  Marian entered into her eternal rest on May 3, 2005.

Dorothy Nesteby

 

Dorothy Nesteby, 86, of Elkader, died Sunday, November 23, 2014, at the Elkader Care Center.

Dorothy was born November 22, 1928, in Arlington, Iowa, to John and Anna (Burrack) Gamm. She was raised along with her seven brothers and sisters in the Volga-Arlington area. 

In 1947, she married Gerald Nesteby and the couple made their home in Elkader. Dorothy and Gerald had two sons, Gary and Bob.

Duane Allen Barnhart

 

My name is Duane Allen Barnhart and this is my story.

On February 25, 1936, I was born on our family farm near Osterdock, IA, to my parents Clifford and Bertha (Knockleby) Barnhart. I joined my siblings Arthur (Norma), Paul (Wilma) and Donna (Laverne Aude).  Later we had a baby brother, Donald Dean, who died at birth.

Marvin Rodas

 

Marvin  F. Rodas, 86, of Elkader, passed away Monday, November 17, 2014, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg. He was born December 17, 1927, in Littleport to Fred and Edna (Winch) Rodas.

He graduated from Littleport High School.

On June 26, 1949, he was united in marriage to Jeanine Rhines at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Edgewood. Three children were born to this union.

Charmion Petsche

 

Charmion Petsche 88, of Urbana, formerly of Fayette, passed to her eternal reward in heaven to join her baby daughter, Mary Ann, on Friday, November 7, 2014, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton, IA.  

Charmion was born May 27, 1926, in Strawberry Point, Iowa, the fourth of 13 children born to Jack and Daisy (Farmer) Kellogg. She graduated from Garnavillo High School in May 1946. Charmion married Arthur Petsche at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo, IA, on August 13, 1946. They had 14 children. Arthur died February 22, 1995.

Shirley Grant

 

Shirley Joan Grant, 91, of Oelwein, formerly of Volga, passed on October 24, 2014, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein. Originally from Strawberry Point, she lived most of her life in Volga. Shirley was born to Check and Rose (Simek) Lang in Strawberry Point, Iowa, on April 28, 1923. The oldest of six children, she grew up and graduated high school in Strawberry Point.

Ruth Fox


Ruth Fox

 

Ruth Marie (Oldfather) Fox, 85, died November 1, 2014, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s. She was born September 16, 1929, daughter of Glen and Beulah Oldfather of Volga, Iowa. Ruth attended Volga Schools and graduated from Volga High School in 1947. She attended Upper Iowa College for a teacher’s certificate and taught county school at Chase School in Clayton County.

Paul Kolz

 

 

Paul H. Kolz, 101, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2014, at his residence in the Galena Stauss Nursing Home. He was surrounded by family and friends who loved him. 

Paul was born on March 31, 1913 in Antigo, Wisconsin. He was the first of four children born to Anna (Skarlupka) and Wenzel Kolz.  His father was from Vienna, Austria, and his mother was a first generation German American.  German was the primary language spoken in the household, and little Paul started school barely able to speak and understand English.

Everett Gisleson

 

 

Everett Gisleson, age 88, of Osage, died Friday, October 31, 2014, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center Emergency Room in Osage.

 Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 3, 2014, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Bryan Lagerstam and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery.  Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
