Mardella Marie Wiedenman, 85
Mardella Marie Wiedenman, 85, Farmersburg, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at her home following a brief illness. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. The Rev. Alan Schulz officiated the ceremony.
Burial followed in Wagner Cemetery, rural Farmersburg. The casket bearers were Alan Wiedenman, Jeff Wiedenman, Joshua Kluth, L'Dean Tielbar, Chuck Shekleton and Don Bossard. Honorary bearers were Diane Kluth, Cheryl Bossard, Maxine Shekleton and Ruth Streicher.
Visitation was held 3-7 p.m. Friday, March 5, at the Leonard Funeral Home, Monona, and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.
Mardella was born August 5, 1924, in Farmersburg, to John A. and Alice (Glawe) Kluth. She was baptized November 7, 1924, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, and she was confirmed July 3, 1938, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg.
Mardella attended country school in the Farmersburg-St. Olaf area and she graduated from Farmersburg High School in 1941. On January 17, 1949, she was united in marriage to Edward Wiedenman at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. One son, Randall, was born to this union. Together they farmed in the Farmersburg area until retiring to Farmersburg.
Mardella was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, St. John WELCA, and she was the financial secretary for St. John Lutheran Church for several years. She enjoyed helping her husband on the farm, gardening, her flowers, birds and attending auctions. She loved her family very much and especially cooking and baking for her two grandsons. Mardella will be greatly missed by the many people who knew her.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Edward Wiedenman, Farmersburg; one son, Randall (Diane) Wiedenman, Farmersburg; two grandsons, Dr. Alan Wiedenman, Brooklyn, and Jeff Wiedenman, Coralville; one brother, John V. (Dorothy) Kluth, Farmersburg; and one niece, Diane Kluth, Rochester, Minn. Mardella was preceded in death by her parents and one nephew, David Kluth.

Florian "Cass" Cassutt, 86, of Hudson, died unexpectedly, Tuesday March 2, 2010 at the Hudson Hospital.
Mass of Christian burial was held Friday, March 5, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson. Burial was held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Bloomington, Minnesota.
Services were in the care of the O'Connell Family Funeral Home, Hudson, Wisconsin.
He was born on May 3, 1923 in Elkader, the son of Leo and Anastasia (Downy) Cassutt. He attended St. Joseph parochial school, graduating from high school before furthering his education at Upper Iowa University. He received his degree in teaching.
As a young man, he enlisted in the armed forces where he proudly served in the United States Army. He served during World War II as a corporal in coast artillery in San Diego. Upon his return, he would meet the former Joyce Kathryn Williams. The two were united in marriage on June 13, 1953, at St. John's Catholic Church in Mankato, Minnesota. This union would be blessed with three children.
In 1959, Mr. Cassutt began teaching at Hudson High School. He taught American studies, psychology, and economics. He also served as assistant principal for Hudson High School. On the side, he coached junior varsity football and basketball, varsity baseball and girl's varsity basketball.
One of Cass's favorite pastimes was baseball. In fact, he played professional ball for the St. Louis Cardinals with the likes of Stan Musial, Joe Garigiola and Earl Weaver.
His other passion was sweets! Anything chocolate was fair game and cake doughnuts were never safe around him. He also enjoyed a round or two of golf and was a devout member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
He will be fondly remembered by his wife Joyce; children, Michael (Cindy) Cassutt, Mark (Donna) Cassutt and Nancy (Chris) Ison; grandchildren, Ryan, Alexandra, Kathryn, Zachary, Allison, Elliot and Ethan; and siblings, Dorothy (Bob) Allen, Jean Ann (Bob) Hinds and Jim Cassutt.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph and Ray Cassutt; and his sister, Catherine (John) Degenford. Memorials are preferred.

Edith Corletta Harbaugh Thein, 97, of Janesville, formerly of Strawberry Point, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Services were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 9, at the United Methodist Church in Strawberry Point with visitation at the church an hour before the service. The Rev. Ron Blix officiate and burial was in the Mt. Harmony Cemetery at Elkport.
Edith was born March 13, 1912, in rural Garber, to Jefferson and Edith Montana Hansel Harbaugh. She had been a waitress, a cook and a teacher before her marriage to LaVern Thein on Dec. 24, 1935, in Elkport.
Her survivors include a son-in-law, Leon Voshell of Waterloo; four grandsons, Wayne and Bart Voshell of Cedar Falls, Craig of Janesville and Brett of Waterloo; one grand-daughter, Judy Barrett of Waterloo; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six brothers, Ezral (Myrtle) Harbaugh, Leon (Elsie) (Eva), Strother, Malcolm (Opal), Murray, and Wayman (Florence); two sisters, Mahalal (Claude) Ridenour, and Jessie (Bert) Elledge; and her daughter, Louise.
