At 2 p.m. Washington time, the Federal Reserve chairman’s press conference on U.S. monetary policy
The event all market participants are waiting for is set for tonight at 8 p.m. Italian time – 2 p.m. in Washington – when Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will hold his press conference and say more about how U.S. monetary policy will move in the year that has just begun. The mood of this expectation, meanwhile, has become more relaxed: if yesterday most of the stock markets were in the red, today European stock exchanges open up,albeit modestly – for Milan, +0.4 percent.
Also recovering are the Asian stock markets, especially Seoul (+1.02%) and the mainland Chinese stock exchanges. All thanks to yesterday’s good session on Wall Street, supported by the good performance of several major companies rewarded by the market after the presentation of quarterly accounts. Prominent among them was General Motors, which despite the complex year in the auto sector reported better-than-expected accounts; something that pushed the stock to close up more than 8 percent. While between today and tomorrow will come the 2022 financial statements of some of the so-called big tech, a sector experiencing a very difficult phase. First today will be Meta (parent company of Facebook), then it will be Amazon and Apple’s turn.
